Well, I don’t know about you, but did anyone notice it was a little… breezy this afternoon?! Yes, that’s right folks. In this most exciting thing to happen to Muscat in… well since the last time it rained, we got hit by a sandstorm. Not just any sandstorm, and thankfully nothing involving Darude, but a real proper “dear god where have those mountains gone and was that a goat that just flew past” sandstorm! Ok, so maybe that is a slight over reaction, but this was my first proper sandstorm and I have to say it was amazing to watch. I do of course hope no one was injured though!

There was talk that a plane tried to land at Muscat airport during the storm and had to abort mid-landing. Can anyone confirm? Any reports of accidents due to it? The roads seem to be not too bad from what I have seen, but there was already build-up as people were worried about the roads being closed due to the Opera House opening tonight.
It was so strange when the storm hit though. One minute it was sunny, the next it went a little gray and before we knew it everyone’s phones were going off telling them to look outside. Rolling in from the north was this giant dark mess of a cloud that within seconds swallowed everything around us. If you don’t believe how quickly it arrived, check out this amazing video I found on YouTube and I have to admit my experience was somewhat similar!
I have included a couple of photos that I found online – hope the photographers don’t mind – feel free to give me a shout if you want them removed, but I thought they were great images so no harm was intended.
So, I’m thinking of having “I survived the great sandstorm of Oman 2011” t-shirts made. Anyone interested? ;)
On a vaguely linked…. Link… while looking for information online, I came across this blog by a young girl called Emma who is currently in Oman for a year as a Yes Abroad Scholar. She is blogging about her experiences here so I am sure she will have lots more interesting posts to come J

OMIGOSH! I feel so bad now. I was having a nap while this happened, and heard rain, so I got up in a sleepwalking state and opened the garden door to let the cats into the hall. Thankfully I keep the doors to the furnished rooms closed, because after that I went back to sleep. When I woke up the entire entrance way was covered in sand and had dirty kitty prints all over. I blamed the cats. It took me over an hour to clean it all and sweep the mess outside and dst everything down. Whoops! And poor kitties, they had nowhere to hide.
ReplyDeleteWhen I noticed the 'orange' sky I asked myself, am I dead or alive? lol I was in my room when that happened. The sky was really... strange
