Oman Cat-astrophe event

Animal cruelty is a big problem here and the number of stray cats and dogs running around the sultanate needs to be dealt with. One group that some of you might not be aware of is Oman Cat-astrophe, an initiative started by a group of kind individuals in Muscat (they also do work in Sohar) who decided they were fed up with seeing the suffering these animals face and wanted to do something about it. The group helps re-home stray cats and dogs so that it not only gets them off the streets, but gives them a loving home to feel safe in. They also neuter stray cats, therefore stopping their ability to breed - something that is essential in controlling the numbers of stray animals.

Now obviously this takes time and money, so to help them raise some much needed funds, they are holding a Grand Book Sale on September 13 between 3pm and 9pm at Dolphin Village. The sale will not only be selling second-hand books as they are also collecting other items for sale. They are currently looking for donations of books and items that they can sell so if you have some bits laying around the house, you can call Lesley on 92914868 or Chris Barlow on 95040189.

Items can be dropped off in Al Khuwair, MQ, Ghubra or the Tafani vet clinic, but check with Lesley or Chris for exact location details. There is also someone willing to accept items in Sohar who will then bring them down to Muscat for the sale.

For more details, visit the group's Facebook page or the event page.

  2. Gosh the stories I have of dogs being tortured in the neighbourhood for 'fun'. :-( Heartbreaking. This is a great initiative, though people here are still quite ill in the head and find pleasure in the suffering of these animals. It's really something that needs psychological treatment.

  4. Insh'allah this initative will be successful!

Until where I know, cats and dogs are not pure in Islam, but the Prophet says that they have to be treated with dignity! It's a shame if they use the religion to distort and justify the cruelty...!

  7. @ Kiara:
First of all, The only animals that are not "pure" in Islam are Dogs and Pigs, not cats.
Secondly, unfortunately ppl in Oman think that they can torture & murder the dogs just because they are not "pure"? Please watch on YouTube a sermon by Sheikh Nabil Al-Awdhi, he explains in details how mercy on animals is a main factor in Islam. And just giving water to a thirsty animal can be a salvation. he also mentioned a story told by the prophet PBUH(that happened before Islam) of a Prostitute who shared her water with a Dog and God forgave all her sins & promised her heaven.
People in Oman are just ignorant about everything ESPECIALLY religion, they think animals don’t have feelings and don’t feel pain.. we have a long way to go educating them.
